French singer and composer Dominique A has returned to the artistic forefront with the release of his sixteenth studio album, titled "Spirales," reviving electric guitar sounds and a direct rock sensibility in a work that blends autobiography and candid political stances amid a tense general climate in France.

Recalling Memories and the Nostalgia of Beginnings

The new album marks a retrospective milestone, as the artist revisits the town of Provins, where he spent parts of his childhood and adolescence—a place he previously explored in his 2012 book "Y revenir." Dominique A also recalls memories of his musical beginnings in Nantes, reviving personal details and experiences he had long avoided addressing in earlier works, where he had often assumed the role of an outside observer.

For this project, the artist collaborated with double bassist Sébastien Boisseau, drummer Étienne Bonhomme, and keyboardist Julien Noël to deliver an intense, direct musical energy across 16 tracks that combine sharp rhythms with quiet, contemplative spaces.

Critique of the Digital Age and Fears of Social Fragmentation

The album carries a critical reading of modern society, with Dominique A addressing growing anxieties over conflicts alongside a critique of obsession with technology and digital networks. In the song "Coltan," he touches upon the exploitation of mines for smartphone manufacturing, while "Shining à 12 ans" focuses on teenagers' unmonitored access to violent content and attention fragmentation caused by constant screen connectivity—issues increasingly troubling many families in France today.

Political Stances and a Social Media Storm

Despite generally steering clear of partisan clamor throughout his nearly 35-year career, Dominique A voiced sharp political opinions aligned with his leftist convictions. He had previously announced a boycott of "Relay" kiosks in train stations and famed venues like the "Olympia" and "Casino de Paris," due to their ties to businessman Vincent Bolloré, who is close to far-right currents.

The artist found himself at the center of a fierce online backlash following an interview with "Paris Match" published with a controversial headline regarding the "La France Insoumise" (LFI) movement and Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The controversy prompted the singer to publish an extensive clarification on social media platforms, reaffirming his total rejection of the far-right "National Rally" (RN) party and confirming his leftist allegiance, while voicing reservations about what he described as "the cult of the leader" within certain factions, at a time when the French political landscape is experiencing sharp polarization ahead of upcoming elections.
