The streets of the capital, Paris, and several French cities witnessed hundreds of thousands of demonstrators taking to the streets on Thursday as part of a national day of mobilization called by trade unions to demand improved wages and stronger public services—issues at the heart of daily living concerns for the general population and residents across the country.
Discrepancy in Turnout Estimates
The General Confederation of Labour (CGT) announced the participation of "nearly 1.6 million" demonstrators across France, including approximately 350,000 participants in the Paris march alone. In contrast, the French Ministry of the Interior, based on an initial and provisional toll, estimated the number of participants at about 600,000 across various French cities.
The Largest Mobilization This Autumn
Despite the usual disparity in estimates between the organizing unions and the Ministry of the Interior, both sides agree that this day marked the strongest mass mobilization France has witnessed since the start of this autumn, reflecting mounting social anxiety over purchasing power and increasing pressure on public facilities and services across various regions.
