Mélenchon from Le Bourget: Committed to Radical Change, Confronting Racism and Police Violence
⚡ In brief
  • Mélenchon rejected softening his electoral platform, asserting before more than 20,000 supporters the necessity of radical and comprehensive change.
  • The speech opened with a minute of silence in tribute to Bingo Buseo Wange, a victim of the recent racist attacks in Yvelines.
  • Scathing criticism was directed at Macron's presidency, accusing authorities of 'brutal police violence', while attacking the far-right for lacking any vision other than racism.

Amid a massive turnout at the exhibition center in Le Bourget, in the Paris suburbs (Seine-Saint-Denis), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, declared his full commitment to his radical political course without compromise. Speaking before more than 20,000 supporters and loyalists, according to organizers' estimates, Mélenchon affirmed he would not heed political commentators advising him to moderate his rhetoric or soften his proposals to win broader appeal, stating: "I will not do that... The only sensible thing I am offering you is that we need to change everything."

Tribute to a Victim of a Racist Attack and Stance Against Hatred

The left-wing leader opened his speech with a gesture of solidarity that resonated deeply with the crowd, calling for a minute of silence in memory of Bingo Buseo Wange, who was killed in racist attacks in Trappes and La Verrière in the Yvelines department, and whose funeral coincided with the day of the rally. This initiative reaffirmed the movement's resolute stance in condemning hate crimes and racism, which deeply concern suburban communities and foreign diasporas across France.

Sharp Criticism of Macron's Rule and Condemnation of Police Violence

Mélenchon directed sharp criticism at the administration of French President Emmanuel Macron, characterizing the current period as a "strange moment," the "death throes of Macronism," and a "bleak end of an era," pointing to rising discontent among youth and broad sectors of the working class. He also fiercely denounced the security response to protest movements, arguing that the government's answer to social demands has manifested as "brutal police violence."

Mélenchon did not spare the far-right National Rally from sharp rebuke, asserting that the political movement "has no real conception of the state other than racism."

An Alternative Political Program and Parallel Controversy

The campaign rally coincided with the release of the updated edition of La France Insoumise's presidential platform in bookstores, titled "L'Avenir en commun" (A Shared Future), which features 1,069 proposals across social, economic, and environmental sectors. Manuel Bompard, the movement's coordinator, stated to the press that the manifesto maintains a commitment to a "total rupture" with current policies, while expanding focus on urgent issues such as illnesses tied to environmental degradation.

Meanwhile, outside the venue, members of the collective "Nous Vivrons" held a demonstration near the entrance of the exhibition center, chanting slogans accusing the leader of La France Insoumise of antisemitism and promoting divisive and contentious rhetoric.
