France: Young Woman Dies After Eating Dried Mushrooms Prompting Widespread Product Recall
⚡ In brief
  • Montpellier prosecutors launch an investigation into the death of a young woman after consuming 'ChampiBon' brand dried morel mushrooms.
  • French authorities issue a recall alert for mushroom packages sold across B&M and Promocash retail chains, warning consumers against their consumption.
  • The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (Anses) reiterates guidelines to cook mushrooms for at least 20 minutes amid more than 700 poisoning cases recorded since September.

French authorities have launched a recall campaign for dried morel mushrooms (morilles séchées) sold in stores following the tragic death of a 27-year-old woman shortly after consuming this type of mushroom. The public prosecutor's office in Montpellier has opened a judicial investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.

Sudden and Rapid Health Deterioration

Public Prosecutor Thierry Lescouarc'h confirmed that initial autopsy findings indicated that the victim, named "Marie-Lou", had consumed these mushrooms, noting that she had no prior illnesses or underlying health conditions. Investigations remain ongoing and require in-depth analyses by a specialized toxicology laboratory to confirm the causal link to the death.

According to testimony from her sister, Julia, the young woman had eaten a mushroom pasta dish on Monday at noon, and her health condition deteriorated rapidly shortly afterward. She explained that her organs failed one after another until she suffered a cardiac arrest early Tuesday morning, at which point doctors informed the family that she could not be saved. Her death was announced later, causing immense shock as she was an athletic, non-smoking young woman in perfect health.

Authorities noted that the young woman developed severe gastrointestinal symptoms on November 2, hours after consuming dried mushrooms under the "ChampiBon" brand, pointing out that severe and life-threatening reactions to these mushrooms are rare and occur in only a small percentage of cases.

Product Recalls from French Markets

The French government consumer recall platform "Rappel Conso" posted an alert recalling 60-gram packages of dried morel mushrooms from the ChampiBon brand, which were sold at "B&M France" stores between October 12 and November 3. Another alert was issued covering 400-gram packages marketed between June 23 and November 3 through "Promocash", a subsidiary of the Carrefour Group.

Authorities have urged all consumers to completely refrain from consuming this product if they have it at home, and to immediately contact poison control centers should any symptoms such as vomiting and acute digestive disorders appear after consumption.

Public Safety Guidelines

This incident comes as health authorities have recorded more than 700 cases of mushroom poisoning since early September. The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (Anses) reiterates the need to adhere to preventive rules, including strictly avoiding feeding wild-foraged mushrooms to young children, not relying on smartphone apps to identify edible species, and ensuring that gathered or commercial mushrooms are cooked for at least 20 minutes, with the exception of specific varieties such as Paris mushrooms and truffles.
