American attorney Michael Sanft, who represented Duane "Keefe D" Davis—recently convicted in the murder case of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur—was found dead inside his apartment on Friday, November 6, according to U.S. media reports, while the circumstances of his death remain unknown at this time.
Mystery Surrounds Death Following Historic Trial
Sanft's passing at the age of 55 sent shockwaves through the legal community, with "USA Today" describing him as one of Nevada's most prominent lawyers. The Las Vegas-based attorney came to significant public prominence when he took on the defense of Duane Davis, a former gang member who was sentenced last October to at least 40 years in prison for his involvement in the killing of rapper Tupac Shakur three decades ago.
Prior to that sentencing, Sanft had announced his intention to appeal the verdict, affirming in earlier remarks to local station Fox 5: "We had the best team possible for this case... We did what our duty called for, and I don't see what we could have done differently."
Widespread Tributes to His Career
News of his passing triggered an outpouring of grief among his colleagues and legal professionals. Marc DiGiacomo, one of the prosecutors on the case, told the "Las Vegas Review-Journal": "Michael Sanft was one of the finest defense attorneys in Las Vegas, and the city has lost a formidable lawyer, but more importantly for me, I have lost a friend," noting that Sanft had always maintained cordial and professional relations with the prosecution.
Clark County official and friend of the late attorney, Michael Sloan, also mourned him, emphasizing that he "was one of those people who left a positive impact on everyone around them." Colleague and fellow attorney Dan Hill added: "He was a lawyer and litigator endowed with a rare, natural gift."
Michael Sanft was raised in the Polynesian kingdom of Tonga before immigrating with his family to San Diego at the age of twelve. He formally entered the legal profession in 2002 and went on to litigate more than 150 major criminal cases over the course of his career.
