Mélenchon Demonstrates Strength in Le Bourget Before Nearly 20,000 People to Launch Presidential Campaign
⚡ In brief
  • A massive campaign rally for France Unbowed in Le Bourget brings together between 17,000 and 20,000 supporters.
  • Unveiling of the electoral platform 'A Shared Future' featuring 1,069 proposals to transform living and social conditions.
  • A symbolic choice of venue in Seine-Saint-Denis, in the Paris suburbs, echoing historic milestones of the French Left.

The exhibition center in Le Bourget, in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis northeast of Paris, is hosting a massive rally this Saturday afternoon for the France Unbowed (La France Insoumise) movement and its presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, with an expected turnout ranging between 17,000 and 20,000 activists and supporters, in a move aimed at asserting the party's strong presence in its working-class strongholds across the Paris suburbs.

Show of Strength and Presentation of the Electoral Program

Manuel Bompard, the movement's national coordinator and campaign manager, explained that the rally seeks to achieve three main objectives: demonstrating the campaign's strength and popular momentum, highlighting the competence of the leadership team, and officially unveiling the presidential platform. This gathering comes on the heels of the commercial release of the new edition of the movement's electoral manifesto, titled "A Shared Future" (L'Avenir en commun), which contains 1,069 proposals addressing economic, social, and daily life issues for citizens and residents.

The movement also plans to rely on an innovative visual approach to bring its political vision closer to the audience by screening a short film blending reality and fiction to provide a tangible picture of how its proposals would be implemented and their direct impact on people's lives and social aspirations.

Symbolism of the Venue and the New Poster

The choice of Le Bourget carries profound political significance in the memory of the French Left. The same venue hosted Socialist candidate François Hollande's famous 2012 speech against the world of finance, and in 1988 witnessed the final campaign rally of the late President François Mitterrand during his reelection campaign—a political figure whose legacy Mélenchon continues to evoke following his decades-long past within the Socialist Party.

The campaign also revealed its new poster, featuring Mélenchon against a rural backdrop in Gergovie, in the Auvergne region, echoing the aesthetic of Mitterrand's famous 1981 campaign poster, and bearing the slogan "Liberty, Equality, Solidarity." This reflects an attempt to build bridges with rural areas alongside his solid base in major cities and culturally diverse suburbs.

Parallel Political Moves

On another front, the French political scene continues its momentum as former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, founder of the Horizons party, holds a public meeting in the town of La Ciotat, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, kicking off an extensive nationwide tour across various French regions running through late December, while reiterating his refusal to take part in right-wing and centrist primaries.
