On Saturday, November 7, the city of Krakow, Poland's premier tourist destination, witnessed the country's worst mass killing incident in decades after an armed man influenced by far-right ideologies opened fire indiscriminately at passersby, leaving six people dead and around 16 others injured.
Details of the Deadly Attack in the Heart of the Tourist District
The massacre took place around 3:00 PM (14:00 GMT) when a man rammed his car into the famous Market Square in Krakow's Old Town, which was crowded with weekend visitors and foreign tourists. According to a local police spokesperson, the attacker began firing randomly, killing four women and two men, among them a foreign national.
The Polish Interior Minister confirmed that 16 people were transported to hospitals for medical treatment, including two police officers; one was wounded by gunfire, and the other remains in critical condition after being shot three times during the intervention to secure the site.
The Attacker and His Ideological Background
Police managed to neutralize the shooter at the scene. Video footage captured by eyewitnesses showed an officer firing from very close range at a man dressed in military gear, a helmet, and a mask, armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
During a press conference, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński stated that the perpetrator acted alone, is a Polish national born in 2002, adding: "All indications suggest he harbored highly extremist views and was fascinated by far-right ideologies, although investigations are still underway to fully verify this." For her part, a police spokeswoman reported that additional weapons and large quantities of ammunition were found inside his vehicle.
International Solidarity and Concern for the Safety of Communities and Visitors
The attack triggered widespread shock across Poland and abroad, particularly in Krakow, which welcomed over 16 million visitors last year. Immediately following the incident, authorities established a comprehensive security cordon around the historic district, with helicopters and ambulances rushing to the scene.
On the political front, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced an emergency meeting to address the aftermath of the attack, urging the political class not to exploit this tragedy for political gains. Polish President Karol Nawrocki also expressed deep concern, stressing that the safety of citizens remains the top priority.
Expressions of international solidarity with Warsaw poured in; French President Emmanuel Macron sent a message of support, alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas described the incident as a tragedy whose repercussions will echo beyond Poland's borders.
