Life Imprisonment for Kenyan Cult Leader Convicted of Starving Followers in Shakahola Tragedy
Kenyan cult leader Paul Mackenzie has received a definitive life sentence after being convicted in the starvation deaths of scores of his followers in the Shakahola forest.
- Paul Mackenzie, leader of Kenya's 'Good News International Church', officially sentenced to life imprisonment.
- Mackenzie was convicted of killing 190 children and adults following the 2023 discovery of over 400 bodies in mass graves in Shakahola forest.
- Senegal holds the 'L'Envol de Sitoé' preparatory show ahead of hosting the continent's first Olympic event, Dakar 2026.
The sentence has become official and definitive for Paul Mackenzie, leader of the so-called 'Good News International Church', who will spend the rest of his life behind bars in Kenya. This judicial decision follows his earlier conviction for the deaths of 190 children and adults, after inciting his followers to starve themselves to death under the pretext of meeting Jesus Christ.
The Shakahola Forest Tragedy That Shook Kenya
The case dates back to 2023, when Kenyan society was deeply shaken by the horrific discovery of mass graves inside the Shakahola forest. Search and exhumation operations at the time led to the recovery of more than 400 bodies, belonging to victims most of whom died from extreme starvation and complete abstinence from food, in compliance with Mackenzie's extremist teachings and directives to his cult members.
African Echoes: Senegal Towards the 2026 Olympics
On another African front, Senegal hosted a symbolic opening ceremony a week ago in preparation for hosting the first Olympic event ever held on African soil—the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. The show, titled 'L'Envol de Sitoé' (The Flight of Sitoé), presented an artistic performance that combined memory, heritage, and modernity.
The ceremonies for the 'Dakar 2026' Games are directed by Khady Niang, who brings a notable and diverse career spanning cosmetics, television, cinema, and major event management, alongside experience in the banking sector.
